Iceland - the land of fire and ice. This already pretty overused slogan still characterizes this island, which is situated close to the arctic circle, very well. Next to lava defines the element water in all its manifestation the country. Big glaciers, fantastic waterfalls, wild rivers and deep lakes characterize the landscape.
Iceland - situated in the middle of the Atlantic ocean - owes its existence to a geological particularity. The island lies on the border of two tectonic plates, the Eurasian and the North-American, which still today are moving apart and are building the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Iceland is one of the very few place where this ridge is above the sea level. Additionally, there seems to be a so called Hotspot, a zone where especially a lot of Magma (molten rock) is rising from deep in the earth crust to the surface, under the island. In average, there is an volcanic eruption in Iceland every four years. The last one was in 2010.
To discover this cold and windy island by bike is for sure a special adventure. However, with the right material, good preparation and especially the right mindset, it's an experience which will stay in memories for a long time; positively hopefully ;-).
