Stromboli is the most northern island of the aeolic islands. It  consists only of the 924 m high volcano Stromboli. The island is about 40000 years old. The special on this volcano is, that it's in a constant activity. Several times an hours the volcano catapults parts of glowing lava in the air. Stromboli is the most active volcano in Europe. It's erupting for several thousand years.
Because there are a lot of little eruptions there will be no big pressure inside the volcano to create a great eruption. The last great eruption was in 1930.
During the day covered with smoke, during the night luminous, the first seafarer called the island "lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea".
From the sea, the island looks like a cone, that's why the Greeks called it "Strongyle", the round. The present name "Stromboli" goes back on the Greek spelling.

Stromboli - the movie
Stromboli became famous because of the movie from Roberto Rosselini "Stromboli, Terra di Dio" with Ingrid Bergmann as a leading actress. The story which is shown in forceful pictures made the headlines not least  because of the love affair between Ingrid Bergmann and Rosselini. The film tells the story about the Lithuanian refugee Karin (Ingrid Bergmann) which comes to Stromboli by marrying the soldier and fisherman Antonio, but never feels at home on this island.

Overnight, the island became very famous and tourists came from all over the world. Nowadays, the number of inhabitants rises every summer about 10 times , than the normal population, when thousands of Italian populate the beaches and hotels. In the other months , it's much quieter. And who wants more loneliness, should leave the ferry at ginostra, which supposed to have the smallest port in the world.

Hiking onto the volcano by night can be very dangerous for someone who doesn't know the volcano. Further the community has 1990 published a decree  which allows hiking onto the volcano only with guides because of reasons of safety and cleanness. You should consider that the volcano can erupt suddenly every time. There where also some deadly accidents.
The bike isn't very useful on the island, but nevertheless it's worth staying there for some days
